Dr. S. R. Ranganathan

Through researching Dr. S. R. Ranganathan's contributions to the LIS field, I gained a better understanding of ethical, historical, and global issues in the LIS field. Dr. Ranganathan worked to ensure equal access to information in India's library field and created a classification system in response to the inherent racism in the Dewey Decimal system. Learning about Dr. Ranganathan's work led me to look more closely at the American LIS field's foundations. Issues that were prevalent during Dr. Ranganathan's time, such as biased classification systems and discrimination against BIPOC patrons, continue to persist today. As I now have more background knowledge of the historical roots of inequality in the LIS field, I am better able to identify and actively work to address the need for equal access to information and issues in the classification systems that I will be working with.

SLOs met:

4: Apply research knowledge and skills to improve practice, critically evaluate the works of others, and answer questions in the profession | | | Through looking into the life and work of Dr. Ranganathan, I was able to improve my research skills and critically look at the LIS field in America.

6: Critically analyze, select, use, apply, and evaluate technologies in the information environment | | | After looking around, I chose Canva to create my infographic, and because of the user friendly nature, I know that this is a tool that can be helpful to me in the future.

7: Understand issues of power, privilege, and marginalization in society and how they relate to the library and information professions | | | Researching Dr. Ranganathan's work highlighted the need for better inclusivity, the need for equal access to information, and the issues that exist in the current classification systems that the LIS field uses.

After analyzing the information gained from the surveys I sent out for this paper, I gained a better understanding of people's various technological and information needs in my immediate community. This, in turn, caused me to expand my perception of what value people in a community may place on their local library. Though several of my participants noted that the library is not an important part of their lives currently, all agreed that the library is an essential part of their community.

SLOs met:

2: Through understanding the relationships among information, people, and technology, apply library and information science principles and practices | | | After reading the responses of each of my participants, I can see how the various needs that people have can influence how they view their public library. Overall, knowing that certain age groups need specific things can help me better apply LIS practices in a library.

4: Apply research knowledge and skills to improve practice, critically evaluate the works of others, and answer questions in the profession | | | I used google forms and created criteria for how I would select participants before reaching out and asking them if they were willing to be a part of my survey.

IGNITE Presentation:

OCLC and WorldCat

Transcript and References

While I already had a basic understanding of OCLC and WorldCat, through my research for my IGNITE presentation, I discovered the need for having connected libraries and all of the benefits that can come with a shared online catalog. The ultimate goal of OCLC and the WorldCat catalog is to make library information and resources more widely available. The importance of equal access to information and materials came up quite a bit during my research and further drove home the need for collaboration in the LIS field and shared knowledge.

SLOs met:

4: Apply research knowledge and skills to improve practice, critically evaluate the works of others, and answer questions in the profession | | | Heavily researched the history and current use of OCLC and WorldCat and was able to form new understandings of the importance of interconnected libraries.

5: Understand the social, cultural, and ethical implications of technologies on individuals, organizations, society, and the library and information professions | | | Seeing the impact that connected libraries can have on people, I better understand the importance of accessibility of materials and information.

6: Critically analyze, select, use, apply, and evaluate technologies in the information environment | | | I went through a lot of trial and error with this project, switching between google slides and PowerPoint multiple times as well as having to work around my computer crashing and issues with subtitles. Now, I have a better grasp on how to make a recorded presentation and how to best utilize the technologies available to me.
